Dr. Jianglong Zhang

Professor Jianglong Zhang is currently a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of North Dakota. He received his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science and an M.S. in Computer Science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in the spring of 2004. He also received his M.S. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in the fall of 2000 and his B.S. in Atmospheric Physics from Peking University, China in the spring of 1992. During his dissertation research, he interacted extensively with scientists at the US Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, CA and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Upon graduation, he worked as a UCAR visiting scientist at the NRL Marine Meteorology Division in the Aerosol and Radiation Section. He received the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator award in 2008, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2009, the North Dakota Spirit Faculty Achievement award in 2011, and the NOAA David Johnson Award in 2012. Professor Zhang's research interests include satellite remote sensing, data assimilation, atmospheric radiation, climate change, cloud physics, and aerosol and visibility prediction. His recent research has focused on satellite remote sensing of atmospheric aerosols and assimilating the data in near-real-time into weather foreccast models. Current research projects include the development of a global near-real-time aerosol optical depth analysis for use in aerosol transport models (Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program) and the development of an operational global aerosol assimilation package through ingesting satellite aerosol products into aerosol transport models. The goal of this research effort is to improve aerosol and visibility forecasting capability using near-real-time observations.
